I read Coryell's autobiography, and he said that Stiff Neck should have had Jimmy Garrison on bass, but he got caught in a bad NYC traffic jam, and came too late to make the recording session. They didn't want to blow the expensive studio time, so he recorded it with just he and Elvin.
I copied that from the record when it came out, and used to jam on it with a drummer when I was in HS.
I've always wondered what the bass line would be if JG showed up. Probably one section in E Dorian, and then the other section would be based on the A to E quartal chords. Did LC ever record it with a bass player?
I seem to remember a Stiiff Neck II on one of his later albums.
