Dots on a diagram has an additional potential problem.

How big is your hand? Your guitar? What is your right hand technique like?

Say you decide to play a G major arpeggio from the third fret of the sixth string. Where is the next note? Same string or up a string? I'd say it matters whether you're a sweep picker or an alternate picker, or something else (hammers, slides, pull-offs, whatever). Do you typically solo within an octave, or do you like big leaps up or down?

I think it makes sense to know which notes you want and where they are. Then, if you want fingerings, find the ones that work for you, in the context of your technique and musical style.

The apparently common approach to learning things by pattern rather than note name surprises me but I know it shouldn't since a lot of great players think or at least learned that way.

I think I'm in the minority on this issue, possibly for good reason.
