If you’re not familiar with Or, he’s a wonderful bassist in New York. He’s played with most of the heavies at this point.

Anyway. He routinely posts really wonderful and insightful stuff on his Instagram. Usually in response to questions.

"How important is criticism in teaching?"

His answer is beautiful, but it's a screen grab so I can't copy it in its entirety. The rest of the post is more philosophically powerful, I think, but I found the specific answer to be particularly interesting:

"Although criticism can play some part in [adding a generative, inquisitive, clear, empowering, and supportive voice to my student's inner dialogue], I don't find it necessary or useful unless it's accompanied by clear redirection towards a different course of action, supported by a concrete and clear diagnosis of the problem we are working on, and grounded in a framework of psychological safety which the teacher is responsible for creating and maintaining."
