Great tune that’s gone from Cootie Williams (w Eddie Vinson) to Big Joe Turner to Dave Alvin. Struggling with the chord progression.

the comping chords in the ‘Lost Time’ Dave Alvin version is great but I’d be happy with a simplified starting point.

    any insights appreciated

It's more or less what you said. I don't know what you mean by a simplified start point. If you mean a simpler way of playing it that's tricky (see below video).

    A - A7 - D7 - D#o
    A /F#7 - B7/E7 - A - E7 (or A/D7- A/E7)

(D7 is usually D9. Some verses begin with A7 and the E7 at the end is sometimes played E7+)

    Either you simplify the chords:

    A - A7 - D7 - %
    A - E7 - A - E7

Or you could play shell voicings for the A /F#7 - B7/E7. Personally I think it's slow enough to play the right chords. But I don't know what you know. You probably ought to learn how to do it properly!

Thank you very much for the quick response. I’m on it and somehow this clears the roadblock.

I agree with Ragman. So that’s probably as close to an objective truth as you can get ;-)
