    There is famous anecdote about such a thing. I may not have it exactly, but here is how it goes.

    Lightning Hopkins was one of those players for whom bar lines and a strict count was less important than the overall groove and affect. When Johnny Winter was playing for him on one occasion, Hopkins stayed on one chord longer than one normally would in a twelve-bar blues. Winter informed Hopkins quietly that it was time to change chords and, so it is told, Hopkins replied:

    "Lightnin' change, when Lightnin' wanna change."
