TBH most of the players you might know on the web are not that active on the circuit. Some of them, like Tom Quayle, don't really enjoy playing live. He's certainly not playing jazz gigs. I could give you a list of top London jazz guitarists who are all amazing and the chances are slim that people outside of London, much less the UK will have heard of them. In fact those live players can get a bit resentful haha.

It's the same everywhere - I think the same is true even of New York players who don't tour.

The other thing is time - heavily gigging players don't have enough time to make high quality YouTube videos. (That's not a reflection on a player's talent btw - there's loads of reasons why someone might to be playing jazz gigs loads.)

Watching Robbie's videos it's clear how much work goes in them. I think people think that doing YouTube well is a sideline that takes little effort. I can say from my own limited efforts, it's a serious workload. I have no idea how long it must have taken him to do that Barry Harris video for example.
100% agree. I don't know of anyone in the jazz scene in Toronto with a serious youtube or influencer level of social media. Just the usual insta, website self promotion stuff.

I don't know how you do it. Definitely harder than it looks to put together concise vids on new topics that have actual lesson material every few weeks like you do. Skills!

Thanks! It feels like a juggle that's for sure. and they start off a lot less concise, believe me. That's most of the work, editing.

But tbh I haven't had a whole lot on apart from a few hours of school stuff a week. It was convenient because I can do it from home and so on, but gigs have been picking up a little recently, hope it continues.

I'm planning on moving to a less frequent upload schedule this year partly because I have neglected promoting and hustling live stuff, and I'd like to do more playing again, honestly (though I think a show or two a week will be more than enough these days).

Also, I'd rather put out stuff that I'm passionate about and can do to a high level. Actually I think this is what Robbie is doing - if you have a look at his uploads, he seems to have done very well for subs out of a fairly sparse upload schedule, because when he does upload his videos are usually really good. That's the model I should have been following more ...

Another example is En Blanc et Noir who has now passed me in subs.

(Also, a lot of creators don't get that the important number is views, not subscribers. Views generate income while inactive subscribers are not a good thing for the algorithm and may actually count against you, but that's another thread really.)

Well yeah I mean. Trade offs. When I moved, I had to prioritize getting the lesson studio back up and running. And the gigging takes time. No fast forward button on that. So I’m gigging more but not as much as if I’d prioritized that up front.

For me still one of the best channel's regarding Barry's teachings (and a great supplement to Chris Park's TILFBH channel) is London pianist Shan Verma's channel JazzSkills. Through JazzSkills I learned and understood things that I did not get from TILFBH (which is really comprehensive and C. Parks is a great educator).

How close Shan really was to Barry you can guess from the beginning of this interview with Shan's nephew Jay Verma (who is a working musician BTW whom I already saw on TV on stage with the British participant of the Eurovision Song Contest two years ago).

I really like Shan’s channel as well!
