Jeff Arnold Favorite Standards Study group

Hi all.

A few years ago there was a study group set up to go through a Jeff Arnold Standards book (see pic of book).

I just found the book on the bottom of a shelf and just tried to look for the study group on my android ( the search function doesn't like Android I think).

Anyhow if someone could point me to the thread I'd much appreciate it. Seems like a fun thing to do over the summer.

Yes, it's the Favorite Standards book.

Seems simple enough but working through the book might yield new ideas to apply to your own playing ( which is the main purpose of doing these things).

I just had some time to look into the book. Some observations...

It looks like that it was written for plectrum chord melody guitar however it is playable with fingers only.

The arrangements seem simple enough, and sparse in parts, but they would do as a first chorus then you can add your own developments over the next few choruses.

There are some nice new voicings in there for me.

There's enough syncopation in there but I'd love to see more triplets in the arrangements ( these can be added into your own arrangement or improv of the piece).

There's also a nice range of keys.

I'll work with the book over the summer and see where it gets me...

I think I'd enjoy doing some of the others in that "Favorite Standards" book we were looking at. We'd done "How Deep is the Ocean" and I think also "Moon River." I think we also did a few from the "Ballads" book, but I can't recall.

I think you need a critical mass of maybe 5-7 solid participants to make a study group "fly." The most successful ones I've been part of had a clear set of general rules, a reasonable pace for progress, and focused on playing with opinions etc, coming primarily from those who post their playing. Everybody has a stake, as it were. So maybe you need to put out a clear "We want to do this, who is with us?" and see how many reply.
