The poll winner for July is obviously "Poinciana". We have a Bossanova backing track this time, using a BIAB Realtracks contemporary trio. Have fun with this one, it is a good old standard.

I'm looking forward to hearing someone use the backing track. I'm struggling to hear how the melody fits over it. Any suggestions for a YouTube version that is similar?
Thanks for posting this stuff, Howie. Though I rarely comment and still haven't come up with anything worth posting, I do work on the songs every month and I have learned a lot from them.

i dont know why these 6 chords are such a challenge. maybe because i've never used them before lol working on the tune thou, and some grips on the chord shape... i got a ton of work and practice just to play something 1/2 as good as i see from you boyz..... again hows this chart?

Yea many versions go to I- instead of IV- ...Amad and Benson.. Dmaj to D-, or in Howies chart... Bbmaj to Bb-. But Howies is an arrangement

That chart looks fine to me - those are the same chords I'm using.

How's everyone coming along with this one? I'm struggling as usual. I doubt I'll ever get any of these songs down solid enough to post but it's still fun to try.
    I really dig this version...

I have been working on it, hoping to have a go at it this weekend.

I discovered that the Session Band app on my iPad has a 'Poinciana' style which sounds just like Ahmad Jamal's group, so it was a no-brainer to use that for the backing track!

wonderful! great lines, great tone and especially good chord melody improvisation. Sounds like a good, professional cut from an album.

Thanks! I have been working on playing lines with chords recently, so I set myself the goal of doing one chorus as a chord solo. Still find it difficult though!

Graham , your version sound better to me me than the Gary Burton & Friends rendition
    CD. very nice lines.
Off thread can I ask your opinion on the time signature on Peter Bernstein's "Love for sale"
from his Somethings Burning CD ? I must have cloth ears ! I can't get my head around it.

Thanks! I won't tell Gary you said that!

Peter Bernstein sounds like triple time to me. I'm not sure if it's 3:4 or 6:8. A bit like 'My Favourite Things'.

Sco didn't even take a solo on it, did he? At least not on the versions I found on YouTube. A shame, I think he would have done something cool with it.

Yes you're right, I was thinking of "Japanese Waltz" probably !
Sco is not melodic enough for my taste , but I'm probably in a
    minority with that.

Recently came across this which is quite melodic (Alone Together):

Thanks. By the way this was done on my Ibanez Artist solid. I'm always surprised how good a jazz tone I can get out of it. I nearly got rid of it once, glad now that I didn't!

Excellent! nice chords in the head arrangement too. You've got very good time, that's something I'm always conscious I want to improve.
