A few thoughts on what this will look like, for me personally. Anybody interested feel free to jump in...no tune requirements, no style restrictions, just solo guitar.

The biggest thing for me at least is keeping up repertoire. I've truly forgotten more tunes than I know...
This was one reason I was never into arranging too tightly...and making sure I know the tune well outside of the arrangement.
Sat down with "Autumn in New York" this morning, I'll try a vid a bit later. I hadn't played it in a good many years. It was surprising what came back to me...and what I had to relearn. It was kind of like catching up with an old friend.

Here's a shot I took at "Tenderly" a couple years back. Not the first attempt, but also far from a polished arrangement. I was thinking of Oscar Peterson for some reason when I played this.

Nice! Lovely tune and tone.
Great to see people jumping in. What would be fun is if we could all share our goals...I talked about mine briefly in the first vid, but I'm also well aware most folks will just watch the playing and not so much the talking.
Long story short, I am definitely not new to playing in this style. I have though, over the last 12 years (which ironically coincides with the age of my oldest child) let my repertoire slip. So I'm here to get it back.
I'll actually be going through old set lists and videos from when my hair was much longer and darker, and seeing if I can STILL play these tunes...and then after I play them-- can I improvise on them too?
Anyway, thanks to those already jumping in. Looking forward to hearing everyone.

So deciding to focus on solo. I'm studying how to play at faster tempos. I'm looking at the Bud Powell approach of playing more sparsely in the left hand as tempos increase because otherwise it sounds too spastic and boogie woogie which I hate. Listen to the beginning of How high the moon, the 2nd track.
The 1st tune is at 300! The one at 13:50 sounds relaxed at 165 haha. I'll just be pushing myself in the upper 100 range and trying to improve my swing in the lower 100 range. Below 100 is easier for me.
I'm also kind of sick of basic bass playing. I like this not root stuff Monk does.

Mr B, you have good time feel in your clips, what are your thoughts on recording to a metronome or drum track for solo recordings? You've said you practice with time keeping tools, do you think you should record with them? Or just f it and let your good time feel take over without a time keeper.

I definitely do some practice that way, but when it comes to recording I just put the phone down and go. Part of that is just laziness, but I figure I gotta take the training wheels off at some point too.
Had a minute to try out "Darn that Dream." What a great tune. Weather is spectacular today, got a few racks of ribs in the smoker...Labor Day rules.

That's interesting.... I've never heard anyone do a solo guitar rendition of this Joan Baez song but if I was to cover it, I'd introduce some dissonant weirdness to reflect the "Mommie Dearest" aspect of its lyrics: Originally Posted by Hyppolyte Bergamotte
