Blue and Green (using open string chords).

    Take 1: Blue and Green 01 - Box.com

    Take 2: Blue and Green 02 - Box.com

P.S. - This is an old arrangement of mine that I resurrected, attached is my original tablature for it.

Here's a go at Time After Time.

I learned the Jeff Arnold arrangement for the study group. As I've been practicing it I've slowly been replacing some of his stuff with some of my own.

I started effing rushing, but I didn't want to do a million takes, so I'm posting it as is.

I was playing Dave Brubeck's "In Your Own Sweet Way" (one of my all time favorite tunes) yesterday to make a demo for Gitterbug. Here's a simple fingerstyle take on my Eastman 810CE7 through the DV Mark EG250 and a Toob Metro GP+. I hope it's a worthwhile contribution to The Autumn of Solo Guitar.

How did you mic it, if you don't mind sharing?

Wow - thanks so much! I almost always record with my TASCAM DR-40x. The internal mics and preamps are pretty good, so I use it as the entire front end running directly into my recording software (Audacity on a PC). I offset the centerline so one mic picks up a little more of the highs from the center cap and the other a bit more of the bottom from the cone. After recording, I duplicate the stereo track, swap channels on the dupe, offset it by 2 or 3 msec, and merge the two. This gives a slightly bigger stereo image that I like without processing of any kind.

Here's a fun little thing that I did last year based on quartal harmony.

Server comes up to me on the break.

server: if you don’t mind me asking, how much are they paying you?

    me: [tells her]

server: hmm. I guess that makes sense. But I hope they’re not paying that other guy that.

    me: what other guy?

server: guy who plays when you’re not here.

    me: oh … okay

sever: he brings this music stand and it plays some of the music for him so he can just play over top of it and … I don’t know. I was like “that’s not jazz.”

    me: [raises coffee cup]

How long is a set? You must really stretch out on these tunes to fill a set, which is great actually. I personally only have about 4 musical ideas to my name, so I prefer to play lots of tunes and maybe just a chorus of improvising... In, Improv, Out.

Don't worry, I’ll only “come at you bro” if you’re all over the place talking out of your a** super confidently. So we’re probably good

This is a quick take of first working on Miles Davis’ “Blue in Green” and Elmore James’ “It Hurts Me Too.”As always, all tunes are works in progress. Apologies for the singing on the EJ tune. This is a fun thread. There is quite a bit of talent on this forum.

    Alright first official submission.

So I’ve been working for about sixth months on some of the sixth diminished stuff from Alan’s Barry Harris book.

I had some false starts because I just have trouble with full drop two and drop three voicings, but a couple months ago I started harmonizing the two “Ed Bickert” voicings for maj and min 6 chords through the sixth diminished scales and that really worked, and also just integrated more seamlessly into the kind of chords I already play.

ANYWAY. The other day I decided my best way forward was probably just going through all my solo rep using these voicings.

Disclaimer: these aren’t arrangements. I like much sparser textures with lots of I single notes. Just for the exercise, I harmonized everything. It’s also my existing list of solo tunes, so the goal isn’t really new arrangements or whatever … just to have another tool more firmly under my fingers.

    so ….

That's lovely. Many versions of All Of Me are glib. It sounds as if you are ready to sacrifice it all. Well done Peter.

    You’re too kind.

Though you might be mistaking my general confusion and hunting for chord voicings for deep insight and commitment to the music.

The tools are pretty basic at the moment …

It’s those voicings on the top four and middle four strings (essentially they are drop 2 with the top not missing, or drop 2 with the alto missing on each string set).

I’m using just the regular voicings with no borrowing unless I need it for the melody. Just diminished voicings correct the dominant chords, so I’m borrowing up to the root where that’s the melody not a few times. And where that B pops up over the D7.

Ive done a good bit with the minor and tritone minor on the dominant and feel okay on that. Just not a great tune for those with the melody notes so I didn’t use them.

Id like to harmonize the same voicings on the lower set, and the basic rooted shells, but I really want to get into diads.

Keep that to yourself. Nobody will know.
