Well, the first chord in the movie score, transposed to Bb major (movie theme is in Eb), would be Bbdim#7, for example: x-(7)-8-6-5-5,
which is close, but not the same as Em7b5 - it's actually Em6b5(sus): x-(7)-8-7-5-5

And the composers voice-leading thereafter is very interesting. The lead sheets I've seen (e.g., the Real Book) dumb down the harmony.

It's a very comfortable easy to play guitar with a satisfying sound. Mind you, I am a home player which is quite a different environment than a gig sound-wise.

Nice! That's a model of how to play the Arnold arrangement, which is much more listenable on solo guitar than one might think given all the space in it and lack of "bottom" in a lot of the chords. And I also enjoyed hearing the new Pat Metheny guitar played!

Thanks! For sure your idea to play it with bass and drums made it a more satisfying overall listening experience with regards to the lack of low notes in the arrangement.

I'm stubborn and determined to play unaccompanied just to see if I can do it.

You definitely showed it works unaccompanied. In fact, the voice movement in the arrangement is better if the bass is attenuated a bit. The AbMaj early on, which is one of my favorite "moves" in any arrangement, doesn't work if you have a boomy bass. I am playing it solo with almost no reverb, and dialing back the tone knob a bit (which I don't normally do) for a dry Jim Hall kind of sound.

With all the space available in this arrangement, and especially without the need to play it quickly, has anyone come up with any solid "Joe Pass" type fills or runs to link the phrases and add some excitement? I'm experimenting with a couple spots where a nice burst of bop seems to be fun. I'm not talking about stop-time or rubato pauses, but fills that continue the momentum of the piece and link the phrases musically.

    anyone else?

Yes, I've been doing that when playing it at a moderate tempo, Arnold's chord voicings are suited to that. My aim in participating in this group was to improve my ability to improvise chord melodies but I digressed into creating arrangements instead.

Actually, the chords I mentioned could be used as IIm7 > V7.

    Em7b5(sus): x-(7)-8-7-5-5 >> A13b9(no 7th): x-(7)-8-6-5-5 (on piano you could add the 7th)

So far, I've had my hands full just trying to play the arrangement as written in time and smoothly.

There is some time left until Sunday so I'll mess around to see if I can come up with something. If it's not too lame I'll try to record/post something before we move on.

Would love to hear what you're doing if you feel like posting some more playing.

I am interested in progressing in this fashion.

    One of the "My's"?

My Funny Valentine, My One and Only Love, or My Foolish Heart (another memorable Victor Young theme song from a forgettable movie)

My Foolish Heart & My One and Only Love Both sound good to me. I used to play Chris Whiteman's version of My Funny Valentine it is a good song too, but I would be more interested in learning something I have not played before.

I'm partial to My Foolish Heart, but I'd like to hear everyone's vote on it.

I do hope that Liarspoker is not gonna make me start another new thread!

I had previously voted in post #65 but don't really care which tune it is. Will be happy to learn and play My Foolish Heart

Yes, I saw that. If anyone else has a preference re: what song we play next please state it so that a new thread can be started for the song we choose.

Just saw your post, Alan, thought this project was comatose.

I'll start a thread for it and join you, thanks.
