    Is it possible for string tension to have opened up the metal loop at the pivot (on the right in the picture). It also looks like it is resting on the guitar top on that edge.

    ... or are some just made like this?

    I agree. Don't you also think it looks like it has been forced to uncurl a bit?

    It's junk. Some are made this way, and can be closed up with some pressure.

    OK, thanks. I was thinking of replacing it anyway, so this gives me enough reason Meanwhile, yes I can remove it and close it up a bit.

    You definitely need to close it or buy a new and stronger one, e.g. ABM.
