I use my coping saw and then fine-shape with a fine file (I use a flat file, a curved file and a round file). I drill holes for the corners of the pickups, but with a hand drill, so I can go slow. Final finishing sometimes with some 1000 or finer grit sandpaper, but usually just rubbing your thumb works well enough :-)

Coping saw huh... and it fits all the way around? I realize a coping saw was designed to go "deep" into a project, but sometimes the pick guards can get pretty wide?

Yes, we call it the same thing, but I've never seen one that deep! This is the one I have, and always see:

Yes! The Stratocaster is exactly why I asked! LOL

I'm going to be adding a neck pickup to an Esquire soon, so thanks for the tip!

what you gonna put in the esquire ?
    —————
my project is a three pu Pacifica 112v
and I might put a hb in the neck for jazz
I just got it so early days
gonna try it out , as is first
(it’s got alnico 5 neck and middle strat type pickups with an open HB in the bridge)

I do like the funky strat neck+ middle sound

thanks for the saw info guys
I think I can cope with that

I'm thinking about a Vintage Vibe CC Rider, but tele-neck sized:

As for the coping saw, I won't be needing it... I found another Fender Brad Paisley pickguard on reverb for $25.

You might consider getting a new blank pickguard (they're cheap on eBay) to modify in case you decide to go back to S-S-S. Then you could put the original back in. I've got a PAC 611 with a SD p90 in the neck and split trembucker in the bridge. The guitar is awesome!

I have used the hot knife before and it takes more time to file and sand. I have left it rough cut and used a pickup ring to cover the rough cut hole.
