The 50th anniversary of the Watergate scandal gives me yet another excuse to post this photo of my very popular band "Now & Then" playing Sunday Brunch By The Pool at the Watergate complex in early June, 1972. I'm playing a 1964/65 Fender Jaguar through a Fender Fuzz Wah and Echoplex EP-2 into a Kustom combo w/ 2-12" Altecs:

    In 1972 I was a pretty odd 11yo kid.
One odd thing was that I was really interested in national politics.

I was riding in my mom's 1969 blue Plymouth Fury III when radio news reported about a burglary at Democratic National HQ. I thought, "Only one person woulda done that. He'll never get elected now."

I was playing either a Harmony Meteor or a Vox teardrop bass back then. Simms Watts fullstack. The Meteor went through a Colorsound Supa Tonebender I think - that could've been '73. ( Homemade fuzzboxes in tobacco tins before that!)

Hmmmnnh.... Generic pornstache - check. Insufferably smug mug - check. A brilliant disguise for a stealth recon mission, perhaps? Keeping a Weatherman Eye on the hippies? In any case, Delusional Goobermensch G. Gordon looked down on everybody, it would seem. I wouldn't take it personally.

Here's me in '72 playing some place in Portland Or. I'm 18. This was a wide ranging jazz outfit with 3 horns, a singer, percussion, and a guy who played Vibraband.

It was 50 years ago today!:-super-amp-jpeg

Guitar: '61 Les Paul Standard. Came with the sideways vibrola that was a total nightmare if you broke a string on stage. It had to go. Older Guitar Buddy suggested I replace it with a trapeze: less invasive than stop tail and would sell for more with vibrola back on. Got stolen loading out from a place called Frankenstein's in Old Town Portland.

Amp: '62 brown-face Super, not reverb. Found it in a garage in Victoria for something like $15 bucks. It got backed into and pinned against something. One side of the cabinet was broken and a bunch of tolex torn off. Even bent a corner of the steel face-plate. I made a new cab for it. Older Guitar Buddy thought I should give it 4 speaks so I did. Seems I did everything he told me to do. Sold it around '75 or '76 to buy Mesa Mark no-mark.

Strap: some sort of macrame sash thing that some hippy made for me.

So if you ever run into an SG with a trapeze that has Les Paul on truss cover and at the other end of the neck, or a weird brown Super with 4 speakers I'd be happy to know where they ended up!

(Somebody should start a thread to keep track of such vintage pics. I know Danny has some other dandies. I have a few more. Not as dandy as this though :-)

    That’s cool!

Bonus point—what song were you playing?

And what archtop was the guy on the far left (facing the crowd) playing?

In 1972 I was 11 and might have been playing my electric, which I think was probably a Univox Hi-Flier. Unfortunately, I can’t find any pictures of it, and my mom gave it away or threw it out after a fire at our house.

I don’t remember the Watergate break-in news, but I remember the hearings distinctly. Senator Howard Baker, who was an alumnus of my high school, played a pivotal role.

Our singer was on the US Senate staff--we did a number of gigs for them, many of which had famous and/or notorious persons in attendance.

    Dock Of The Bay

My partner in crime was playing a Gibson ES-175D through a Vox Wah into a '68 SF Twin w/JBLs.

That pool picture reminds me of a pool gig I did in ‘72. Gibson Firebird into a Silvertone amp with an ungrounded plug on a wet deck.
The shock I got when I grabbed my mic was truly mind-blowing!
    Lucky to be alive.

We have a 'don't ask don't tell' policy around here :-)

Looking at the gig pix I get a different vibe, but I see similarities: everyone's using curly cords, 2 Vox Clyde McCoys (mine was anyway) and everyone's got one of those old school folding steel guitar stands. Mine worked perfectly for 20 years. No idea where that went...

Seen what those old wah's are going for these days? If I still had some of that vintage stuff I might be able to retire!

Glad you made it through Gilpy! I've had a few sizzles but nothing really serious.
