Comping over a minor blues tune is an essential skill for any jazz guitarist, as minor blues tunes are some of the most commonly called songs on jam sessions. While it\u2019s an important form to have under your fingers, many guitarists spend the majority of their practicing on the major blues form and less on minor blues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>These progressions will start off rather simply, with what is referred to as the basic minor blues, and will consequently get more and more complex until reaching a point of chordal saturation.<\/p>\n<p>Each progression in the lesson has a backing track that you can listen to, jam along with, and use as a practice aid.<\/p>\n<span style=\"--tl-form-height-m:555.828px;--tl-form-height-t:361.672px;--tl-form-height-d:361.672px;\" class=\"tl-placeholder-f-type-shortcode_10980 tl-preload-form\"><span><\/span><\/span>\n<h2>Minor Blues Progression 1<\/h2>\n<p>The first example lays out the chords to what is considered <span class=\"licks\">the most <strong>common minor blues<\/strong> progression<\/span>. Instead of playing the Dm7b5 chord each time the II chord comes around, we will play its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/tritone-substitution\/\">tritone substitution (<\/a>Ab7) instead.<\/p>\n<p>The Ab7 chord <strong>resolves smoothly<\/strong> down by a half-step to the G7alt chord that follows it each time it is played. This progression is often intertwined with example 1 without much distinction between the two.<\/p>\n<p>Since Ab7 and Dm7b5 are so closely related the only real <strong>audible difference<\/strong> between these two progressions is the bass movement in bars 9-10 and 12.<\/p>\n<p>This is the chord progression of standards such as Equinox and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/mr-pc\/\">Mr. PC<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Listen &amp; They allow you as an improviser or comper to have <strong>more movement<\/strong> with your lines\/chords, while not stepping too far away from the tonic key.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Listen &amp; All eight chords move by a fourth to the next chord before the Gb7 chord resolves down by a\u00a0half-step to the Fm7 chord.<\/p>\n<p>This progression can be heard in the playing of <span class=\"licks\">McCoy Tyner<\/span> and other <strong>hard bop<\/strong> players of that era. Blues in A Minor<\/h2>\n<p>In this section, you will work on a minor blues in A minor with the iiim7-VI7\/iim7-V7 substitution introduced in <strong>variation 6<\/strong> above.<\/p>\n<p>Before you dive into the chord study as a whole, here are a few <strong>important concepts<\/strong> that are used in the study.<\/p>\n<p>If you dig these sounds, you can take them to other keys, other progressions, and other tunes as you apply them to other <strong>musical situations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey\">Quartal Chords<\/h3>\n<blockquote><p>Contrary to traditional chords, which are built in stacked 3rds, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/quartal-chords-harmony-voicings-for-guitar\/\">quartal chords<\/a> are built by stacking\u00a04th intervals up from the root note.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can see this comparison in the example below, where an\u00a0<strong>Am7 drop 2<\/strong> and <strong>Am7 4<sup>th<\/sup> chord<\/strong> are shown\u00a0side by side:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3675 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/am7-chord.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"569\" height=\"254\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/am7-chord.png 569w, https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/am7-chord-300x134.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 569px) 100vw, 569px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Notice that the <strong>intervals<\/strong> are all different in the drop 2 chord, which comes from a stacked 3<sup>rd<\/sup> foundation.<\/p>\n<p>In quartal chords all of the intervals are <strong>symmetrical<\/strong>. This gives it a more ambiguous sound that many players like to use in their jazz guitar chords.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3665 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Minor-Blues-Chords-1.gif\" alt=\"Minor Blues Chords 1\" width=\"720\" height=\"205\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey\">3 to 7 Triads<\/h3>\n<p>These chords are built using <strong>three-note shapes <\/strong>(triads), but are used in a non-traditional sense to \u201cjazz\u201d them up a bit.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than playing the triads from the root of any given chord, you\u2019re playing them from the 3rd, which highlights the <strong>3-5-7 intervals<\/strong> of that chord.<\/p>\n<p>You can see this technique in action with the Am7 chord below.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the first chord, you are playing a drop 3 root-position shape.<\/li>\n<li>In the second chord, you are removing the root, leaving a C major triad (the 3-5-7 of Am7).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are two ways to go about 3 to 7 triads:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you can simply remove the root of the underlying 1-3-5-7 chord.<\/li>\n<li>Or you can learn the triads for each chord shape.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Either is fine, so go with what works best for you&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-3666 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Minor-Blues-Chords-2.gif\" alt=\"Minor Blues Chords 2\" width=\"720\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey\">Drop 2 Chords<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/drop-2-chords\/\">Drop 2 chords<\/a> are some of the most popular shapes in jazz guitar and are found in the playing of just about every great jazz guitarist.<\/p>\n<p>These shapes are built from a <strong>1-5-7-3<\/strong> root-position shape, with inversions constructed out from there.<\/p>\n<p>You can see the drop 2 shapes over both <strong>Am7 and F7<\/strong> in the examples below.
