Read on to learn how to play diminished arpeggios on guitar and how to use them in a musical context.<\/span><\/p>\n<span style=\"--tl-form-height-m:562.469px;--tl-form-height-t:361.875px;--tl-form-height-d:361.875px;\" class=\"tl-placeholder-f-type-shortcode_10059 tl-preload-form\"><span><\/span><\/span>\n<h2>How is a Diminished Chord Formed?<\/h2>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/diminished-chords\/\">diminished chord<\/a> (and arpeggio) consists of 4 different notes that are each a <strong>minor third<\/strong> (=3 half tones) apart.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the chord formula: <span style=\"background-color: #ffcc00; padding: 5px;\">1 b3 b5 bb7<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Example: Bb\u00b07 = Bb Db Fb G<\/p>\n<p><em>(if chord formulas are Chinese to you, read our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/jazz-guitar-chord-theory\/\">Chord Theory Tutorial<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>3 interesting facts about diminished chords:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A diminished chord can be named after any of its 4 notes. The chord in the example above can be named Bb\u00b07 or Db\u00b07 or E\u00b07 or G\u00b07. These 4 chords consist of the same 4 notes.<\/li>\n<li>How many diminished chords are there? The answer is 3:\n<ul>\n<li>C\u00b07 = Eb\u00b07 = Gb\u00b07 = A\u00b07<\/li>\n<li>C#\u00b07 = E\u00b07 = G\u00b07 = Bb\u00b07<\/li>\n<li>D\u00b07 = F\u00b07 = Ab\u00b07 = B\u00b07<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Every diminished fingering pattern on the guitar neck produces the same arpeggio every time you move it 3 frets up or down. Here&#8217;s an example for Bb\u00b07 (= Db\u00b07 = E\u00b07 = G\u00b07):<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin-left: 57px; margin-top: 20px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/images\/lessons\/diminished-arpeggio-pattern.gif\" alt=\"Diminished arpeggio fingering pattern\" width=\"660\" height=\"225\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>How to Play Diminished Arpeggios<\/h2>\n<p>Like I said, remembering diminished arpeggio fingerings is relatively easy because you only have to remember 3 shapes:<\/p>\n<p>1) This is the first diminished arpeggio fingering for Bb\u00b07 = Db\u00b07 = E\u00b07 = G\u00b07. You get the same arpeggio if you move this pattern 3 frets up or down, so you can start it on the 6th, the 9th, the 12th or the 3rd fret, while still playing the same diminished arpeggio.<\/p>\n<p>Start by learning this arpeggio, memorizing it, and then taking it to other keys across the fretboard.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/images\/lessons\/diminished-arpeggio-1.gif\" alt=\"Diminished arpeggio fingering 1\" width=\"654\" height=\"234\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>2) The second diminished arpeggio fingering for Bb\u00b07 = Db\u00b07 = E\u00b07 = G\u00b07. This way you are approaching\u00a0each note in the dim7 arpeggio by a half-step below.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/chromaticism-how-to-add-chromatic-notes\/\">chromatic notes<\/a> in this pattern, practicing it with a backing track rather than a metronome would be helpful. This will allow you to hear these shapes used in a musical situation over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/jazz-chord-progressions\/\">common jazz chord progressions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first lick is played over the first two bars of a Rhythm Changes progression in the key of Bb, the most commonly used key for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/introduction-to-rhythm-changes\/\">Rhythm Changes<\/a> to jam over.<\/p>\n<p>The Bdim7 arpeggio is simply played ascending over the Bdim7 chord, but notice how the arpeggio is lead into by a half step, and lead out of by a half step.
