The most popular example of this is the diatonic enclosure, which is built by playing two diatonic notes surrounding a diatonic target note in your lines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Used by just about every important jazz guitarist, <strong>diatonic enclosures<\/strong> are an effective way to increase your jazz vocabulary without having to build any <strong>tension <\/strong>in your lines in the process.<\/p>\n<p>Though tension and release\u00a0are an important part of <strong>jazz soloing<\/strong>,\u00a0they are\u00a0not always desirable.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding diatonic enclosures will allow you to build a sense of <strong>jazz vocabulary<\/strong> into your lines in those moments where you want to stay within the underlying key center.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is a Diatonic Enclosure?<\/h2>\n<p>To begin your study of this important <strong>jazz soloing concept<\/strong>, you\u2019ll learn what a diatonic enclosure is and how to apply it to your improvisations.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A <strong>diatonic enclosure<\/strong> is when you play one note above, then one note below, and finally your target note when soloing.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>You can also play a note below, then above, then your target note, but you\u2019ll focus on the other <strong>variation<\/strong> in this lesson as it\u2019s more commonly used in jazz guitar.<\/p>\n<p>When applying diatonic enclosures to any note in an <strong>arpeggio<\/strong>, or scale if you choose to go that route, there are three variations that you produce.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>first variation<\/strong> is a tone above and semi-tone below, as you can see and hear in this example.<\/p>\n<p><i>Listen &amp;
