The most famous version of Unit 7 is on Wes Montgomery&#8217;s album &#8220;Smokin&#8217; at the Half Note&#8221;. This album, which is essential listening for any jazz guitarist, was recorded live in 1965 with the rhythm section of Miles Davis (the Wynton Kelly Trio).<\/p>\n<p>In this lesson, you will learn how to play the melody of Unit 7, how to comp the chords, and how to improvise over its form.<\/p>\n<span style=\"--tl-form-height-m:555.828px;--tl-form-height-t:361.672px;--tl-form-height-d:361.672px;\" class=\"tl-placeholder-f-type-shortcode_10980 tl-preload-form\"><span><\/span><\/span>\n<h2>Unit 7 &#8211; Analysis &amp; Improvisation<\/h2>\n<p>Unit 7 is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/jazz-blues-chord-progressions\/\">12-bar blues<\/a> in C with a bridge, played in the AABA format.<\/p>\n<p>During solos, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/jazz-chord-progressions\/\">chord progression<\/a> is a bit different compared to the chord progression of the theme.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the chord changes that are used during the solo.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-11500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Unit-7-chords.png\" alt=\"Unit 7 chords\" width=\"779\" height=\"1413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Unit-7-chords.png 779w, https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Unit-7-chords-165x300.png 165w, https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Unit-7-chords-768x1393.png 768w, https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Unit-7-chords-565x1024.png 565w, https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Unit-7-chords-585x1061.png 585w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 779px) 100vw, 779px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey2\">Bar 1 to 4<\/h3>\n<p>On the C7, you can play the C Mixolydian mode or the C <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/blues-scales\/\">minor or major blues scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Wes plays two counts of Gm7 and 2 counts of C7 in his comping here, adding the iim7 before the dominant chord.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey2\">Bar 5 and 6<\/h3>\n<p>Over the F7, you can play the F Mixolydian mode or the C minor blues scale.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey2\">Bar 8 and 9<\/h3>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/20-ways-to-play-ii-v-i-vi-chord-progressions\/\">2-5-1 chord progression<\/a> in Ab major.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey2\">Bar 10<\/h3>\n<p>Db7 is the tritone substitute of G7, the dominant of Cmaj7.<\/p>\n<p>Abm7 is the ii of that tritone substitute.<\/p>\n<p>Here you can play the Ab <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/melodic-minor-modes\/\">melodic minor scale<\/a> (=Db Lydian dominant scale).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"grey2\">Bar 24<\/h3>\n<p>An A7 chord to go to the Dm7 chord at the start of the bridge.<\/p>\n<p>Here you can play the D <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/harmonic-minor-scale-jazz\/\">harmonic minor scale<\/a> or the A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzguitar.be\/blog\/altered-scale-for-guitar\/\">altered scale<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Unit 7 &#8211;
