| | uncommon number of measures Hello All: I was messing around with simple progressions trying to come with something that creates tension or unanticipated changes or durations without using altered chords. I came up with: 6 measures of Dmaj7 3 measures of Fmaj7 2 of E7 2 of A7 1 of Dmaj7 at the end. Repeat three times and I think you will see what I mean. ( I hope ) A total of 14 measures. I am used to working with mostly 12 and 32 measure stuff. Has anyone heard of 14 measures or know of artists who work with an uncommon number of measures ? Thanks, Gregg |

| | The "A" section of Dizzy Gillespie's Stablemates is 14 measures. It's kind of a PITA to deal with, to be honest, but once I listened to the recording about 100 times I was familiar enough with the melody to be able to follow it. When my band-mates are soloing on those changes, thuogh, I still have to make sure to count. :-) |

| | Listen to Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Cold Shot" and count the bars in each chorus. You have to count each chorus because it's different every time, at least I'm pretty sure it is. It's not 16 or 20 or anything like that, either. There's a 19 bar form, a 15 bar form, and a 17 bar form, and then some. It's really screwed up, but you don't really notice it. This isn't a jazz song either, so I hope it helps, but the verse progression in the Foo Fighters song "Everlong" is 7 bars long. That song came out in the mid 90's and I never noticed it until a month ago when my sell-out Top 40's cover band learned it. |

| | There are to many...At a gig I played last night..."Alone Together", "Punjab", Joe Henderson tune, "Backwards Bop" a Billy Childs tune, 1st A was 15 bars. Christians Mcbride's "I'm Coming Home", a funky 2nd line thing with 10 bars in the A and 5 bars in the B section. Look at Phil Markowitz, Michael Brecker,(slings and arrows), Sreve Masakowski, any Billy Childs tune, Florian Ross, Bill Bruford, Amina Figarova, even John Scofield's "Big J". Like I said, too many, I see not only odd number of bars but Time changes... some from quarter notes to eights, it's a bitch and I have to sight read a lot of these... A lot of guys play out of "The All-Jazz Real book" and "The European Real Book", both Shur Music...Reg |

| | "infant eyes" by Wayne shorter is three 9 bar phrases, kind of strange.
"Continuum" by Jaco and "Actual Proof" by Herbie are 2 tunes my band plays that are some odd number of bars.
I think it all depends on the melody really, and the groove. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
