| | 17 Blues chord progressions Hi I thought I should get this theory thread started with a chart showing variations in progressions for an f blues. When I first started taking jazz lessons I was aware that some people were playing way more interesting chords than the 3 that I was using. Of course you don't use these all at once but they are options that can be mixed and matched.
Having said that once when I was jamming with Scofield in a group lesson(yes, it's called namedropping Sorry) I started out playing the Blues for Alice changes and then neatly dovetailed into a coltrane matrix, or so I thought. He suddenly stopped his solo and said hey you broke the golden rule, if you start a recognised progression you must keep going. for what it's worth it was a great lesson.
Here is a chart I made of options for an F blues. http://leighjackson.muzic.net.nz/FBl...ons%20(WP).pdf
Enjoy
Cheers

| | Yeah but Hey, that's great if you play blues in F, but pretty useless in any other key! (Just kidding) |

thanks!

| | neat post G7. for those looking at another take on this (based off the key of C) check out the blues chapter in ted greene's chord chemistry. transpose those down a whole step and do the same for these and you've got your blues covered in pretty much the most important keys you'll ever need... |

| | That's why people shouldn't be afraid to bump old threads - they are often useful for new folks. I would have missed this. Good stuff. |

| | Yeah, I should have also mentioned that I wouldn't use those subs right away, they make a good 5-6th chorus, especially when comping. The C pedal is great at the top for creating energy and pushing the soloist in new directions.
