scales and different cultures In learning scales and arpeggios, I came across something interesting that I would love to understand. I hope someone can help. It seems to me that different cultures have taken specific musical scales and made them their own. The chinese have taken the pentatonic scale, the Arabs have the harmonic minor, the Spanish have the phrygian mode and when playing the phrygian major the other day, I realised that all these notes are used in the jewish tune 'Hava Nagila'....I'm sure that thousands of years ago, there was no definite musical decision among jewish musicians to 'take the 5th mode of the melodic minor and use those notes to express our type of music'. How is it that the unconscious evolution of music actually obeys strict musical rules? |
