I actually bought that when I was in high school... It's pretty good. It kind of poops all over the idea of playing anything outside of the harmony of the tune. He emphasizes only playing the notes within the triad of the chord being played, or whatever notes diatonically occur in the chord of the moment (IE C6/9 = C E G A D period, nothing else).

I can't say it didn't help me, though- I came to that book before I had started to get heavily into jazz, and up to that point I'd just been playing modes. It helped to illustrate the chord scale relationship really clearly, as well as some basic theory that I had been unaware of up to that point. It's not the be all end all system of improvising- none of them are- but for someone who doesn't have a background in jazz it's a great way to elevate your playing to a more harmonically sophisticated level.

I purchased it, I like the concept as chord tones are important and visualizing a chord shape can be helpful. But to make music in a style most of us are better off learning lines from other musicians, especially at faster tempos and for jazz. After all music is a language so learn by imitating others.

Looks cool. I dig that chord-tone stuff. It's the irrefutable foundation of jazz harmony IMO.
