Default diminished/half diminished chords in ii V I

Anybody got any ideas about this? Last night I played a half dimished chord run over a ii V and it sounded great! (over a Em7 I played a Em7b5/Fm7b5/F#m7b5/Gm7b5).

Passing chords! You end up on Gm7b5 = G Bb Db F, which works over A7 as an A7alt (#5b9)
