Is that E altered over that first break? Sounds real cool.
And then a whole tone scale later over the Bm7b5 E7... and that's cool too!
And more altered over the Em7 A7...
And the chords (built in 4ths right?) at the end, that open sus sound that makes it 'hang' a bit, very nice.
Thanks, it's great to listen to these different versions and learn from all. |

I had added the Am6 chord at the end on my backing track (instead of landing on a Cmaj7 after the last Dm7 - G7). The 4ths just kind of happened

How do I post a transcription?? I don't have any software for this (I don't think) Sorry...I'm kinda old

Sailor | Wow someone from my world... I remember scratching out music (composing music) in front of a moviola, I still have a Cal 20.... my secret... I use my son to keep me up to date. I recently started live streaming gigs on the net... very cool... thanks to my son. If you don't have one... borrow one... best Reg |

| | Are we done with FMTTM and are we doing another tune...or is everyone sick of talking about tunes... The way I was taught years ago... is you keep adding to your repertoire, a little quicker also. As your learn new tunes you keep playing through the old charts as needed. Sometime as you learn new tunes you get information that helps with the older tunes.
Maybe we should pick a new tune and solo in specific style, for example create a new melody that connects the harmonic motion,(chords) and use one of the standard methods of embellishment of transformation,( improvisation) to develop and re-harmonize the new melody.... I'm easy... just looking for more ways to develop our playing abilities...Best Reg |

| | New Tune Reg has the right idea here, IMHO, we are ready for another tune. I also think we should ask to put it into something other than the theory section thread. Perhaps a "Tune Analysis" or or something similar. I really enjoy the different approaches I hear from everyone when they post their version of improvising on a tune. This is my favorite thread and much more fun, interesting and helpful than some of the "nitpicking" (no offense intended here) that seems to be growing in some of our other threads.

| | @ Reg, great ideas. Let the fun continue.
Reg, Kenbennett and I posted some questions for you over at the previous Have You Met Miss Jones thread. If you get a chance to take a look that would be cool. http://www.jazzguitar.be/forum/theor...tml#post118755 |

| | I don't know if it would be appropriate, but I was wondering if it might be interesting to take a non-jazz standard and go through the process of how it can be improvised from its basic chords into a jazz format?
For example, taking a song like Roy Orbson's "Crying" or Don McClean's "Castles in the Air" - I'm trying to think of songs which are well done in their own right - not just basic I-IV-V and which might lend themselves to some creativity.
Of course, any song would work, although if this is a good idea, it might be better to stay away from those which haven't already been done many times like some of the Beatles tunes... What do you think? |

| | I think it is a great idea to add another tune. There is no reason the other tune analysis threads can't continue to live on if anyone wants to add some sounds or ask some questions. I hope to contribute if I can get some time to set up the recording gizmos.
It would be nice to address some tunes that have unique progressions. Like the bridge on Miss Jones, which interestingly did not garner much attention. Seemed the diminished chord won the day.
Also, Tony' idea of treating a pop tune in a jazz style would be an interesting challenge. Of course the tune would have to be reasonably well crafted to work.
As the Wiz says, the theory bickering on some the other threads is getting a little tiresome and are, quite frankly, not very useful.

| | Hey Sailor - I think we're all here to learn, AND as Wiz says, because (usually) we don't get sidetracked by some of the other nonsense :-) And yeah, a really nice jazz-blues would be wonderful. That's the problem, really. It's all good!
Thanks all of you for the participation that you're continuing to put in. I'm still trying to monitor things, but with less time than a few weeks ago - I've got a dissertation deadline coming up way too fast :-) But I'm still going to be here to give me those much needed breaks! |

Yeah, out of the theory section and come up with a new title for the thread.
In the title, I think the word 'practical' is good and maybe we should avoid the word 'theory'.
Any ideas?
My concept of these threads is buddies hanging out, having a beer, trading licks, some practice ideas, and learning to play some new tunes. |

| | +1 To all the ideas up to now.Perhaps it could be called The Practical Standards Group
Then move it to the Lessons forum...al least then it should avoid any hassle.
Just my £00.02p worth
cheers,
Tom

| | Hi everyone - the last post is too bizarre. It is a copy of a post which I submitted on January 6th and it has nothing to do with me - I have no idea where this came from.
Cheers,
Tony - the real one :-) | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
