Default Yes And No

(A section)

D13sus/-----/-----/-----/Dma9/-----/-----/-----/

Am7 D7/Gma7 Cm7/Bbma7/-----/Em9/-----//

(B section)

Am7b5/-----/D7b9/-----/Gm9/-----/C13/-----/

Fm9/-----/Bb13/-----/Ebma7/-----/Am9/-----//

Tune by Wayne Shorter
Form is AABA (14+14+16+14)

New Real Book suggests F7+ as alternate chord for Cm7 in A section

The melody adds these harmonic colors in the B section
Am7b5-----11 and b9
D7b9-------b13
C13--------13 passes thru b13
Bb13-------adds a 11th at the last dotted quarter of the 2nd bar

Not hard to play except that people like to play it very fast.
Pretty amorphous despite a quantity of movement in 4ths and multiple II V's
I am curious to hear how others organize their thinking with this one.

Thanks

I'm a vertical player so I just play the chord scales and guide tones, in their context of course. Playing chord scales and guide tones is a very straightforward approach that doesn't require any theory or mental gymnastics.

I actually just finally learned this tune yesterday - funny coincidence.

After a few cursory listens to the solos on the original recording, it seems they use a mix of pentatonics and generally scalar playing for Dsus and Dmaj7, but bebop-oriented phrases for the ii Vs. There's a few spots where you can pretty clearly hear long pentatonic sequences.
