Default scale book (fingering)

Could anybody suggest a good book with scales that include fingering? I have problems figuring out which finger to use while ascending or descending a scale.

From the friends I've asked, there does not seem to be a consensus (most rock and blues players tell me not to bother with using the pinky). There should be some sort of guidance, though. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

If it's still available, I'd suggest Chuck Wayne's Scales from Hal Leonard Publications.

Use the pinky!

I use the five shapes that Jimmy Bruno teaches. IIRC, there is a free download PDF on his site with the fingerings.

Go here for Bruno's "Five Shapes:"

I use 'em, & recommend Bruno's Guitar Institute.

That Jimmy Bruno info is great. I'll be checking out his products on his site.

Does the book on scales include suggested fingering?

I wouldn't suggest you any book for scale fingerings. Try to find it out by yourself. You've got the scales, so work on them, get used to them, analyze them. Find out your fingerings! I never had such a book and never have any doubts when it comes to what finger should I use here or there.

+1

If you really learn Jimmy's method, the notes are always under your fingers.

I've got the three volume Herb Ellis guitar method a few weeks back.

It's similar to Jimmy Bruno's method in that it uses "shapes". The fingering is included, so I've been using the pinky consistently. It's taking some getting used to, but I'm willing to sit and practice until it becomes part of my muscle memory.

Another option is Joe Pass Guitar Method. It shows you Major, Natural Minor, Melodic Minor, Dominant etc, scales within the CAGED system with fingering suggestions.
As for the use of the pinky... develop your own fingerings. It all depends on feeling and dexterity. Some people don't feel like using the pinky because of being the weakest finger others (like me) use the pinky all the time so it's not written in stone whether you should use it or not.
