Newbie! Approaching Fusion Guitar(?)

Hi guys It's me again

Recently, I have been listening to new songs and artists both on the "rockish" and "jazzy" side and I have stumbled upon Allan Holdsworth who is known to be the greatest Fusion guitarist ever. I found his, no, I found the Fusion genre quite intriguing. The way people make use of their legatos well, how they execute arps and all that...

I was just wondering how they come up with such licks? I really want to get to know more and explore this genre so, how do I approach it? Can anyone teach me?

Thanks in advance and to those who've helped me in the past, more power to you guys!

P.S Please list down the guitarists who have greatly influenced your style if you may

I am a big fan of the 'fusion'. Never liked the name, fusion describes so many types of music, for example, the Elvis Presely, the Sun Sessions, country and western, and R&B 'fusion', has little to do with jazz 'fusion'. Cant offer too many tips to playing, but I have some bands/people/albums you should check out that will probably be over looked by others.

Chris Tarry Group (Pete McCann on the guitar) - Almost Certianly Dreaming, Sorry to be Strange. Worth the money!!!! I would also recommend Three Sisters- Village.

Metalwood (no guitar, but it doesn't matter)- just buy them all. The Recline has John Scofield on it. Chronic is...Chronic. And 1-3 are just amazing as well.

These are all on Chris Tarry's website www.christarry.com

Check out Tribal Tech. They are my favorite band, period. They are no longer together as a group, but I believe they have 9 albums. This is the band that got me into playing jazz.

If you want to check out their compositional prowess, the album Dr. Hee is the way to go.

If you want to check out their improvisational abilities, try Rocket Science.

Fusion, to me, is what the title implies: a fusion of musical genres. Therefore, it is only logical to me that, in order to successfully approach such music, you must be really good at all genres you are trying to fuse together. If you're a heavy rock n' roll player as well as an insane be-bopper, you've got something there.

That's probably not all there is to it, nor is does that answer sound satisfying, but I think it's part of it.

Yeah, the fusion I'm assuming you mean is really just a combination of Jazz and Rock. Try studying some Jazz Sax and Trumpet players. Coltrane is good. It seems like the legato sound you mean could be an imitation of horn instruments.

Fluffypants,

Google Derryl Gabel. He has a series of wonderful fusion instructional DVD's that deal very specifically w/ Holdsworth-style lines. Fairly affordable and despite being low-tech, are well done.

What The Heck,
I don't understand it anymore.
Is this all about Fusion guitar music? When I cliqced the link I got something about X-ray telephones. Not Interested in these gadgets!

When I listen to fusion, I'll listen to all kinds of things like Tribal Tech, Metro (Chuck Loeb & Wolfgang Hafner) CAB (Dennis Chambers & Tony McAlpine) aso. In fusion there are a lot of things going on!

(Marishkka looks as good as a beautyfull guitar to hold, though.)

Allan Holdsworth studied John Coltrane lines to get his sound. Also, he plays scales that have 4 notes per string and has very long fingers. Crazy!

Hmmm...well, I think that Chris Poland is an excellent rock/metal player with a smoother than usual touch for that kind of music. However, the band under his solo is not playing anything like jazz fusion. I think the name of the album on the YouTube video says it all: "Return To Metalopolis". He's a pretty good player, however he is not playing anything to do with jazz.

Totally agreed, this guy is good...but it's nothing to do with jazz.

If you're into this kind of thing, you might also like some of Rick Graham's stuff: YouTube - It Never Rains.......by Rick Graham. He also plays a pretty mean classical guitar!
