| | Jazz Guitar Material on Scribd Hello everyone..for those of you who haven't used it before, there are more than a few jazz guitar related e-books on Scribd. I wouldn't advocate downloading copyright material, but for preview/sample purposes it works nicely (and then you could obviously buy whichever book you enjoyed reading).
A quick search for 'jazz guitar' will give you an idea... |

| | I've alerted 2 friends that I found copyrighted material of theirs there; one was furious and had them remove it, the other shrugged and said, "oh well....', so it is a site to be used with great caution and consideration of the rights of the authors who are usually NOT the ones posting there. |

I'm guessing at the moment they take the attitude that Youtube used to, implying that the copyright issues lie with the uploader rather than them as the provider. Youtube came unstuck with this eventually though!
That aside it is a great way of sharing your own work, I uploded one of my transcriptions there Cherokee (Med) |

FYI, I used to post my arrangments of tunes here, chord melodies mostly, so I did a little research.
I contacted ASCAP and read the goverment issued literature about copyright.
Even though it's your transcription, if you use the melody (and/or lyrics), and you didn't have permission, then you are violating copyright. If it's a transcrition of your solo, no problem. If it's a transcription of somebody elses solo....I'm not sure. But melody/lyrics are defimately a no no .
The fair usage clause *could* fit if depending on how you use it or post it. There are , for example, lots of university sites that post transriptions. As a university they would fall under fair usage for educational purposes.
Just an fyi. I got concerned reading the news about people getting hit with suits so I felt it was in my best interest to do a bit of research and ultimately take my stuff down. |

| | By the way, Nice Dan, I already found your transcription, and it's tremendous as alwyas. Unfortunately, the issues I was referring to were complete copyrighted BOOKS, not just transcriptions!!! One is published by Mel Bay, not posted by the author, and the other is a self-produced method book. Posting YOUR transcriptions of others' work is one thing; this was somebody posting whole scans of published books!!! |

| | Yeah, it's totally disrespectful to be stealing artists work without the proper dues.
It's the 'joy' of the net...! |

| | Now, I have found a number of out-of-print books and things that I check with Google and Amazon first before I print them, also a couple interesting Masters Theses on the work of Jimmy Ponder and Harry Leahey that you may wanna search for. But Don Mock's Melodic Minor? David Oakes' book on Classical Technique?? C'mon, that's a lousy thing to do to guys that get a marginal income from those things as it is!!
Note: there IS a long O-O-P book by Joe Diorio on Rhythm Changes also available. Joe no longer has that for sale anywhere; I inquired. |

| | Yes indeed, there needs to be a lot of caution when using the site..or any other site for that matter. All fair points made here...as I said, in my view it is to be used for preview/sampling purposes... I disagree with the whole culture of 'torrent' this or other and that people's intellectual property is used without their permission...alas, the net is full of copyright infringement..so I suppose it is up to everyone to be ethical...I'm glad forum members have the right approach... | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
