What are some of the best recordings you guys are listening to that are in 7? I've gotten my feet wet with odd time signatures but realized I simply haven't listened to enough recordings to be able to grasp them properly when I'm shedding.

    Immerse me!

Sco in a nice Yesterdays in 7

How about in 5? That's a great odd meter too.

Dave Brubeck. All of his "Time" albums are killer.

Mike Stern & Lee Ritenour... they play in 7 so seemlessly that you're not paying attention you might not realize it's in 7. Here's the music from Ritenour's site: http://leeritenour.com/musicscores/s...full-score.pdf

You can use this one as backing track for practice.
Maybe it is not Jazz, but it is mine!
    Partly 7/4, partly 4/4 ...
If you don't like the visuals, you can turn the screen off, audio you will like, for sure ...

My first venture into 7 was Airto's Tombo in 7/4.

I'd also suggest his song Mixing aka Misturada.

Chico Pinheiro's Buritizais is another good one.

    Hermeto Pascoal's Capivara.

Mixing is probably easiest. xo xo ox / ox ox ox xo. The / is where the chord changes in the bar

Buritizais is similar, but much faster. It also varies, with a kind of airy, open section.

At one point, the chop may be something like xo oo xo oo xo ox oo

Capivara may be more like xo xo ox ox oo xo xo

I guess I wouldn't want to bet the farm that those are exactly right, but the point is that there is an underlying pattern -- I like the term "chop" -- which is different in different songs.

My experience was that I had to listen for hours -- probably dozens of hours -- before I could feel the chop in 7 and solo, even crossing barlines, without getting lost. But, I still kind of sing the chop to myself to keep oriented.

    Here's one I wrote. It's a samba/bossa in 7/8. Off the forthcoming record.
