Default Peter Bernstein and Brad Mehldau Jive Coffee

Can't get enough of Peter (or Brad for the matter). Someone is posting a lot of the videos from a concert they did together on Youtube. What' you think? Gotta' love Jive Coffee:

and

(Peters solo)

(any body know who wrote this song btw?)

I dig that band like crazy. I am positive that is a tune from Peter's Criss Cross label disc and I am 99% sure he wrote it.

It's a Peter original, from "Signs Of Life" from 1995, on Criss Cross. Christian McBride & Greg Hutchinson played on the cd. I posted those videos, there's a couple more songs from the show I think. They'll be up soon. Cheers, Mads

Every day either on these forums, or in class, I discover amazing new musicians. I'd never heard of Peter Bernstein, but what a great player! I've ordered up his Monk CD from Amazon. Thanks for the cue.

If you just discovered Peter Bernstein I reccomend "To Damn Hot" by Dr. Lonnie Smith, and "Freedom in the Groove" by Joshua Redman

Amazon.com: Too Damn Hot: Dr. Lonnie Smith, Peter Bernstein: Music

terrific sound quality for youtube, wow! very good musicians too.

regarding the tune? well i hate to be the Simon Cowell of jazz but i have to say that "jive coffee" was incredibly plodding and boring. sorry.

Well, it's all a matter of taste, isn't it?

sure. and philosophy. and analysis. so without much analysis admittedly:

i thought that the tune was simple and repititive, and failed to enagge the listener in a very effective manner in the first few minutes. i also thought that Brad M. took a very long time to build any significant tension & interest. he can certainly do otherwise. just not a very memorable tune AT ALL.

IMHO.

hmm..

I think in this video what we should be appreciating is their use of rhythm.

Rhythm is something that is quite hard to appreciate unless you've studied it so you know what it sounds like.

There were some complex poly-rhythms going on in this video which I think is quite substantial and as adamreir said it's all a matter of taste..

Default 5/4 time is suicidal

5/4 time has a way of sounding repetitious, heavy, and plodding, and ruins many a good performance. It seems that despite that, every good player has to fool around with it at least once. Remember Dave Brubeck's 5/4 efforts? The drum solo on Bernstein's piece was particularly boring.
But I liked it anyway because I like the players. Don't know as I'd buy the album though.

Well, for me it IS a matter of taste. Sure sometimes I do care about tension and release, sometimes I care about the philosophy. At times it really triggers me to hear a D# arpeggio over a D, other times I get really hung up on polorythm used in tunes or improvisations. lines travelling from well known tonality and outer space (and maybe back again?).

Scales, tonality, rhythm what ever.

but. hmm. I still enjoy The Beatles, Led-Zeppelin, Steve Reich, Philip Glass, eeem. So What, and a lot (!) of music that not really triggers me in a intellectual kind of way.

This song..

It's funky

It makes me want to dance

I like it.
