| | Oleo Hi,
First time poster here. Do I get some sort of badge for that? Anyway, I'm actually mainly a bass player, and an electric one at that ( ). But I bought a guitar a few years back and I've been a closet guitar player ever since.
Anyway, I've been working on expanding my repertoire and as part of that I've been putting up some vids of me working on some songs on the bass. So to get a chance to work on my guitar playing I decided to put up some guitar vids as well.
'Nuff said! Brang on tha music! |

By the way, this is Acci from the AAJ forum, and I did appreciate your posts there in response to your Serenity vid. I like your method of basically just playing melodies for practice. Do you do anything else more technical, like run substitutions, practice chord scales, practice dif rhythm groupings, etc?

Do you do anything else more technical, like run substitutions, practice chord scales, practice dif rhythm groupings, etc? | Well, sometimes I work on technical things when I try to do something and I can't. Then I usually take some time to work on that specific difficulty I'm having. And sometimes I work on arranging songs for guitar or guitar/vocals. Sometimes a new scale or pattern or new way to play a chord pops up and I work on that. I have worked alot on technical and rhythmical things when I was younger, but mainly on bass. It translates pretty well to guitar though.
So right now I'm just learning songs and if anything comes up that I can't play I spend some time working on that, wether it's a technical thing or a melody or chord I hear in my head but can't get out. Yet.
As an example I tried a implementing a new scale yesterday and just sat for an hour trying out how it sounds over different chords. I'm just now starting to get into "exotic" scales, so that's alot of new melodic possibilities opening up, and a lot of work to be done to internalize those sounds.
Oh! And I'll start working on that chord melody vid asap!

| | Very cool, great playin... There's something about bass players, we always remember we're in the rhythm section. Can you play with out singing... not that it was bad, it was great. But after a point it takes away from the actual solo... thanks for posting, looking forward to more...Reg |

| | I thought the singing was great for steering his lines in the right direction. I should do more of that. But Reg is right, when recording is going on, stuff some cotton in your mouth. :-)
I really liked your lines. Great stuff. |

| | I think being able to sing along - in pitch - with your lines is... well I like it. It's a great skill to have. I love it when Benson does it. (Although when it's not in pitch, yeah that's a big distraction to the performance.)
I'm guessing you've done some vocals in your musical endevors.
So, I guess I'm taking the minority position, I like it.
And nice playing, thanks for posting this.

| | Being in pitch doesn't stop Keith Jarrett from singing along, unfortunately. |

| | Hey JHL... I also said i dug the singing, just not all the time.... My comment was more in the direction of... was the singing like an uncontrollable habit... like weird facial expressions, grunts and groins or some of the others. I've personally gone through a few... they spring up with out warning... Again dug the groove of the lines...Reg |

| | As you suspected, regarding the singing, it's not something I do consciously. I can sing in pitch with what I play if I focus on it, but mainly I just use my voice as a "bridge" between my brain and the instrument. I wish I could turn it off, but it's just one of those things that makes me feel comfortable. I should have a better setup though for recording so it wouldn't end up on the videos.
