Default Zoom H2N and similar products

I'm looking into hand helds. I've read about the Zoom H2N, Tascam DR-40 and even the Boss BR micro.

I understand that the Boss unit has additional features, but I'm curious about it's hand held recording quality.

Also I'm wondering if anybody has used either the Zoom H2N or Tascam and how it stacks up.

The primary use would be to record live music either in my music room or on a gig.

Thanks

Oh BTW, for those Boss BR Mico owners, can you play along with the units backing track and simultaneously record both that track and your playing?

I just bought the Korg "Sound on Sound" which I'm using for impromptu practice use when I don't have the time and/or inclination to set up my looper/amp etc. So far I'd say it's pretty good. The speaker is very quiet and the interface is imo a little quirky but with headphones it works fine for my purposes using the built-in mics or with a guitar plugged in.

Hi John,

I'm not sure why you'd want a field recorder that has multi-tracks...

I'd be more interested in a Boss BR-600. Pretty portable and much more features.

Fep,

Everytime I've recorded live gigs or jams it was with two mic's. The results were always fine. With a Zoom type product it looks like all I have you do is hit record and then download it to an Audacity type program

With The BR 600 I would have to set up mic's ,etc, ect.

Too much time. All ireally want to do is record and play back. Nothing fancy.

I think I ruled out the BR80. Too many bell and whistles that I would not use.

Thanks

The Boss BR-600 has two condenser mics built in.

But now that I see what you're using it for...

I have a Tascam DR-07 and I'm very happy with it. Just push record and off you go. And just plug the supplied usb cable into your computer and transfer the files, as easy as pie.

Here, I just recorded a sample (a little piece of my tune 'Dry Creek Road' warts and all) while making this post:

I believe the DR-07 has been replaced by the DR-07 MKII

I've had the Zoom H2 for a couple years, and it's awesome. It's very transparent, and if you are in a great sounding space, it will record great sounding tracks. I could record a live jazz album with this device.

Default New Redesigned Boss Micro BR

The Boss Micro BR has been redesigned and is now the BR-80.

Here is a review of it. You may want to check it out first since the original was pretty highy regarded when it came out.

Hi John,

I was just checking out the DR-07mkII and I'm wrong in that it doesn't look similar to my DR-07. It has multi-track recording and reverb which the DR-07 doesn't have. I don't need those for my uses and it looks like neither do you.

It looks like the DR-05 is more like the discontinued DR-07. It's a much better price too.

I'll echo what cosmic said about the H2. We use one to record rehearsals and shows; the sound is as good as the room.

I recently replaced my H2 with the H2n. I can't hear any difference in the sound. However, the H2n is easier to operate and has a significantly longer run time on batteries.

Hi JohnW.

I bought a Zoom H2 (without "N") a couple of months ago to start recording my bandīs practice sessions.

I am really happy with the results I get (at least recordingwise... ).

I will be glad to send you a take or two from our rehearsal room if you contact me via email or PM.

Cheers,
H.
