| | Need cheap webcam alternative My computer is old and the CD/DVD drives don't work, so I can't install a webcam. But I'd like some way to record my playing so that I can upload it to the Internet.
You're not missing anything grand because I've been unable to do this, but people can't point out the flaws in my playing unless they hear / see them.
O, and the watchword here is *cheap.* I'm in dire straits.

| | No additional hardware like a cd/dvd drive is required to record video with a webcam, it's about software. Here's a web app, but I'm sure you probably have something else on your computer that will record video. http://www.google.com/support/youtub...n&answer=57409

| | Yeah, I know you don't need a CD / DVD drive *after* you install a webcam, but I don't have one and I've yet to find one that can be installed without such a drive.

| | Whatever you decide, DO NOT BUY JVC. They are not cheap at 400 or 500 E, there is no place for en external microphone, the internal mic is shameful, the video quality is sinful and you have to convert through 3 different formats to upload. If you do, you will find out the hard way!!

A few more details, please..? Is your computer so old as to not have USB ports? What OS are you using (Win 95, 98, XP, or Mac..?)? Is it that expensive to install a new or second-hand CD drive..?
Answers to these may help find a solution suitable for your budget (or absence of..!).
Meanwhile...

| | Yeah, I have USB ports. The CD / DVD drivers are gone / nonfunctional. I downloaded some driver-finder software, but it didn't help. The computer is about eight years old--I don't want to put any money into it. I can't install anything that requires use of a disc drive.

If you have a webcam, and it has software/drivers to install, get them copied from the CD to a USB stick, and go from there. There is no need for a CD drive on your machine for the webcam itself. Is there no-one near you able to transfer the files you need to a USB stick?
Hope this helps...

| | You can often find install software/drivers for download on the web. I've done it with soundcards, printers etc. Might be worth looking into. |

| | Now that I'm back on a real computer, here is an example of what I'm talking about :
$22.49 webcam on amazon . Amazon.com: Logitech Webcam C210: Electronics
You can download the driver from logitech. Webcam C210
Dad's solution is really the simplest if you could do it at work or a friend's house. |

| | Thanks for the help guys. I'll ask a friend about putting the CD onto a USB drive and using that. If that's a hassle, I'll look into downloading the driver from logitech. Thanks to all for responding! I love this place!
