| | Recording clean jazz...Direct input Hi All,
Looking for clean jazz sound to record.
I have Line 6 pod 2.0 but dont manage to get clean jazzy sound.
I read about preamp, DI, Mic....and get confuse. I prefer direct recording with MIC.
Appreciate detail explanation, guiding...
Thanks!
Ronen

| | This is a common Direct Input device: BEHRINGER: UCG102
I have one of those but I prefer to Mic the amp because I can hear exactly how the sound is without headphones. With Direct Input you will also need a set of headphones, but you don't need a pre=amp, unless you wanted to modify your sound.
I only use a 10W Laney amp when I'm recording via Mic. This allows me to crank the amp up a bit without too much volume - adds to the tone. |

| | "Direct" is the term typically used for plugging the guitar into a DI box and the DI plugs into the mic input of recording device.
"Mic" refers to using a microphone on the guitar or amp and the mic is plugged into the mic input of the recording device.
It's common for bass player to be recorded with a DI, but guitar is less common. A DI on guitar is too clean for most guitarists, and exposes all the technique issues in your playing. With a DI you hear every little string squeak, noise of moving picking hand over strings, any noise in bad cables, jacks etc. This is all noise that gets lost when playing thru an amp. Occasionally you will record with both a DI and Mic and mix together. |

| | Ronen - It sounds like you already know what to do with a mic (and you said you prefer it ...)
As noted, if your sound card or interface does not include instrument-level inputs, you'd use a DI box (there are many varieties) in front of it.
Many DAW recordists record direct and then re-amp afterwards with software amp simulations. |

| | Hi, jazzguitar-friends!
Here is my recent recording I made using the MBox 2 Mini and Pro Tools 8 LE here: http://www.jazzguitar.be/forum/showc...tml#post126530
I did it without mic, I've plugged the guitars directly to M-Box, so thats the "directly" recording))
Would love your votes and comments! Thanks in advance! |

Ronen | Here is an example of my guitar plugged directly into my laptop via the mic jack. Backing track created with BIAB. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lRm74AxPPI

| | Yes Bombero I thought you had a real "authentic" Wes sound, considering the guitar you were using. |

| | Thanks for the compliments guys. Yes the "thumb" will give you the Wes Sound no matter what type of guitar you play. I'm working on getting an L5 Wes Montgomery Edition for my retirement gift to myself in a couple of years |
