Default Recording software worth the money

Anyone who can recommend a fairly cheap but priceworthy recording software?

If you get a Zoom H4 or H4n, you also get Cubase bundled in with it. I use GarageBand with mine, but the Zoom H4n is one of the best recording purchases I've ever made.

Hi, jazzguitar-friends!

Please check out my recent recording I made using the MBox 2 Mini and Pro Tools 8 LE here (I've paid 150 USD for it, by the way):

Would love your votes and comments! Thanks in advance!

I use Acoustica Mixcraft Mixcraft 5 - Affordable multi-track audio and MIDI recording software. at $74.95 it's pretty reasonable. I'm no recordologist and I haven't worked out how to use it all yet.

Looks like I should switch from Audacity to Reaper.
Argh! Learning curve!

well with reaper, you get a free month's trial to see if you like it, seems very fair to me

Are you wanting to use software instruments or just a straight recorder?
  • Reaper is good (as mentioned)
  • GarageBand is free on most macs and very good, including the software instruments
  • Also consider one of the stand-alone multitracks like the Tascam DP-008 or DP-03. I've used Logic for a long time but found that the simplicity of the DP-008 helped me focus on playing instead of tweaking and setup. With external mic preamps it is really good quality.

I got Ableton Live lite free when I bought a Line 6 Pod Studio GX a while ago. It's easy to use if you just want to record an audio (e.g. guitar) input and does the job.

Gear

My 0,02$ is GarageBand. It is essentially or actually free, completely intuitive and fairly powerful. I am personally not into using these Apple loops to create backing tracks but instead I use it together with BandInABox and that works beautifully and effortlessly. One can really concentrate on the music and once one is satisfied export it as MP3. To me it leaves nothing to desire.

Via a simple audio interface you can record your guitar using either their software emulations of amps and effects (which are fairly good) or mic the guitar in (which sounds a bit more authentic i find). And you can also sing if you are inclined to and record that via the same audio interface (i use a fairly cheap m-audio interface that was basically a plug and play operation with no complicated setup or anything).

Have fun,
Frank
