Kreative Software's Krystal Audio Engine is pretty good - it's the predecessor to the current PreSonus Studio One. Krystal Audio Engine is sixteen tracks. I have a couple of friend s who use it in preference to anything that requires a fee.

I know you asked for free, but Reaper is a very low cost, fully featured audio recording software. Highly recommended, if you really want to get into it.

I have a PreSonus StudioLive mixer, so I've been using Studio One Artist lately because it came with the mixer. I also have Cubase 6 Artist (not free), which I like, and I use Audacity on my Linux machines (free).

The first recording I made with the PreSonus (I'm new to digital mixers) is one I made in about an hour and a half... so it's crude... with an Alesis drum machine, an Egnater Rebel 20 amp and two guitars (Gibson & PRS). It should at least give you an idea of what a complete idiot can do with a DAW using free software, a pot of coffee and damn little talent. If you have talent and two pots of coffee, I'm sure you could come up with something really cool.

i use reaper. The price is right. You can use the full version for free though I bought a paid license to support them.

REAPER | Audio Production Without Limits

Blows away sonar and pro tools IMO...

If you want to record that many instruments separately, assuming you want everybody to play together at the same time, software won't be a problem. Hardware will. You are going to need an interface with about 8 inputs minimum. Singer, bass, and 2 guitars will take up 4. Drums can be done with with about 4 mics--one on the kick, one on the snare, and a couple of overheads.
