I love his improvisation abilities (especially when playing outside) but I'm not sure I like his compositions...anyone disagree?

I think Holdsworth is the man! IMHO! His legato, outside playing, wide intervals and use of chords is outragous!

Yeah, I disagree....But I can see why they are hard to listen to. He has developed his own language and uses it in his compositions, and it can be a bit trying to get on board with it. He's written some duds....all the greats have....but some stellar stuff too...and everything in between.

His writing has gotten progressively better over the years. The 16 Men disc has some killer compositions on it.

Yeah, I agree, I haven't heard so much of holdsworth but watching that video made me realize how much his style developed since his early days.

And I agree holdsworth compositions have got such exciting harmony.. he writes great stuff.
