Default Mundell Lowe Concert - Martin Taylor was a no show

I saw Mundell Lowe play last night. It was suppose to be a duo of Mundell Lowe and Martin Taylor. Martin Taylor was a no show, the story was he had some sort of a visa problem.

So Mundell gave my guitar teacher, Bob Boss, a call to fill in for Martin Taylor.

Two things I found amazing...

1) Mundell at 88 years old, as far as I can tell he hasn't lost a step. Great playing.

2) Bob Boss getting a call a day before the gig and with no rehersal played great also. I didn't notice any difference in the level of playing between the two guitarists. Mundell would call a tune, many of them I'd never heard or heard of before, Bob Boss would ask, what key? And off they'd go; he only used sheet music once and just glanced at it for a moment during the first chorus. I wonder how many tunes Boss knows, I wouldn't be surprised if it was 1,000 or more.

Some tunes I recognized and remember: ATTYA, Nuages, My One and Only Love, Yardbird Suite (at a Charlie Parker like tempo. the 88 year old playing the head, playing it clean). They played for two hours, two musicians really listening to each other and doing a great job.

I was thinking during Yardbird Suite, I'm hearing it played by someone who actually played with Charlie Parker, perhaps actually played this tune with Charlie Parker.

88 years old! There's hope for us all.

Great story. I know a guitarist that reminds me of your teacher who has also played with Mundell. Wish I could have seen that gig... did anyone there record it?!

Yeah, Mundy is a national treasure. He and Bucky Pizarelli are about the same age, but Bucky has slowed down some, which is totally understandable. However, when you look at guys like Bucky, Mundy, Jimmy Wyble before he passed, Jim Hall, and others, these guys are playing at awfully high levels at advanced ages.

I agree, there certainly is hope for all of us. Based on Mundy's record, I still have a good 40 years of guitar playing left in me.
