Default Rodrigo y Gabriela

Saw these guys in concert last night at the Ryman in Nashville. Great venue, great show. Not jazz, but some pretty good guitar work going on. Their both very talented, but she is an incredible mix of percussion and rhythm guitar all in one. Her timing was just over the top.

My only critique was after awhile the songs started sounding like they were doing variations on a theme (like if a jazzer only played tunes using Rhythm Changes all night). And, the use of the wah-wah pedal on a gut string - while pretty cool - was a bit overused.

Still, I would recommend seeing them if they come your way. I'm glad I saw them. If you haven't seen them, check out the YouTube below...

I really like Rod and Gab, cool group. I agree about the variations on a theme. They have made two albums and some of it seems redundant. The use of the wah on the second album is interesting. I've wondered what they would possibly do on their third album to keep pushing the envelope. Afterall, they are using acoustic guitar. I love the energy on their albums.

Although you can fault Rod/Gab for knowing only triads in common keys, nevertheless you have to hand it to them for virtually inventing a new genre ("heavy nylon", Ottmar Liebert meets Led Zep), and exploiting it into a world-class act. Their romantic and already semi-legendary history as street musicians who made it big is inspiring. They may get more soptisticated if they last, but then they won't be playing the big arenas.
