James Muller and Tim Miller come to mind...others you may not know but who are not "new" are Louis Winsberg and Steve Topping

Enjoy!

Nir Felder -- Check him out on Greg Osby's new disc. Killer.
Christopher Crocco -- Plays in a trio w/ George Garzone. Beastly.
Byran Baker -- My opinion, the scariest player on the planet. Completely unique voice on the instrument, tons of attitude, insanely talented in jazz, fusion, indie rock, electronica, etc.

You didn't mention Adam Rogers or Ben Monder, but I am sure you are hip to them already. If not, they are very beyond great.

For non-straight ahead, check out Oz Noy. He is killer.

the new lage lund album that just came out on criss cross, "unlikely stories," is absolutely amazing. a major statement on his part.

nate radley is another young guitar player in new york who is making some great music these days. he is part of a great group called "bad touch" with gary versace, loren stillman and ted poor.

matt stevens, who is part of christian scott's band is another too watch.

julian lage is another. he has worked with gary burton and is part of eric harland's band.

This thread strikes me as funny. The "new" guys you listed are not new at all, and have been on the scene for a long time. I guess it is more of who is emerging or coming into their own. New to those who aren't keeping an eye on the scene. I do know what you mean though.

A new guy to keep an eye on might be Dan Wilson. Here is a live clip of an outdoor gig. Funky jazz tune.

Eh, Jeff is most certainly NOT a new player--he's 40 and has been a pro since the mid 90s with the AACM cats and then with Tortoise for many many years. BTW, he was roommates at Berklee with Kurt Rosenwinkel.

When I think of new player, I think of someone starting out, who is younger, like Gilad Heckelsman, who studied with Vic Juris.

I am glad you are checking out the Baker disc. I have said this for years and stand by it...the guy is an absolutely singular musician. He has at least 3 discs coming out this year...an instrumental follow-up to Aphotic, an electronica disc, and a vocal indie rock disc. Keep your eyes peeled for those if you dig progressive music. I have heard clips of all of them and they are sickeningly good.

Another guy that I rarely see mentioned is Jacob Young. He isn't 'young', around 40 or so, but he hasn't been out long. He is on ECM and plays and write amazing music...really the kind that inspires me most to write.
