Just saw it on the CNN website.

Amazing life he had, all 94 years of it.

Default Les Paul

Les was my first guitar hero and a picture of him playing in Manhattan at age 92 is an inspiration for all musicians who wish to continue playing/performing past retirement age.

Recently told a nice story about Les Paul by a friend of mine who was playing in the US. When he met Les Paul be noticed that his right arm was somewhat crooked, so he asked him what happened. "Broke it in a car accident", was the reply. "The doctors told me that I would not have much movement with it after it had healed so I had to decide which position I would have the arm set." Paul then put his broken arm on top of a guitar and said "I'll have it like this." Hence, the unusal way he subsequently held it.

Whether this really happened, or my friend simply heard from someone else, I don't know. But it sounds pretty good! And I've seen the photo of them together.

Les was a nice guy and really gave the guitar a shot in the arm with all the hits he had. The world is a poorer place without him.

I've heard the story about his arm also. In fact, I think I read an article about it in a guitar magazine some 10 years ago or something. There was a picture of him from back when it happened with him sitting, holding his guitar, smiling with a big cast on his right arm that held it basically in classical playing position.

I was hoping to see him play one last time this coming September. Ah well, at least I got the chance 2 years ago with my old man who is also a big fan. I wanted Les to sign my "Les Paul and Mary Ford Song Folio" but since he isn't around anymore to don his signature I have decided to hawk it on eBay... Item number 160355828218. If anyone in the forum wants dibs please let me know.

Last night at my restaurant gig there were two elderly couples sitting together just about 5-6 feet away from me. I asked if there were any Les Paul and Mary Ford fans in the room, and they began talking about how that music was so important in their lives when they were younger.

I talked about how much of an innovator LP was, and what he meant to those of us who were musicians. I began playing, and within two bars they recognized "How High The Moon". Left a $15 tip. Nice.

Les Paul's influence in the music world is legendary. And to think that many of his great earlier recordings were done on a strung up 4 by 4 with an Epiphone neck and some electronics. In the world of the electric guitar, there is no one that Les Paul hasn't influenced in one way or another. As far as his sound is concerned caompared to the electric light, when a guitarist plays amplified, it sounds like soneone turned on the incandescent lights. When Les played, it sounded like someone turned on multicolored neon lights.

Interesting Les Paul

Les Paul was my very first influence as a solo guitarist. At that time, I
purchased the 45rpm records he did with Mary Ford.
I'm sorry he left us, but he now has a lot of notable company....
namely Barney Kessel, George VanEps, Tony Mottola, Joe Pass
WHAT A JAM SESSION THAT WOULD BE!!!!

He was a fabulous musician and inventor. He did so much for the music industry. Unfortunately you will hear more about Michael Jackson's death than Les Paul's. With that said I am not trying to take away from Michael's career as a singer, he also had a troublesome lifestyle. I feel that Les's impact on the music industry was much bigger. Without him no solid body electric guitar's or no multitrack recording.
