Default Kenny Garrett

I have been listening to this guys album Beyond The Wall and I am blown away!!!

I have always liked jazz and I always thought that the late '50s stuff was the golden age but Mr. Garrett is so way beyond it all. I would probably have not appreciated it had I not listened to to Bird, Clolrane. and Miles but damn does this man kick ass or what!!!

I am thinking I should have started on Sax not guitar. I just love the soul that this instrument has. Is it too late at 55 to start learning Sax.

i saw him on Friday night with his more soul/funk band. Totally ripping shit. He's one bad cat man,I've always loved his playing. That sound is outta sight.

He played a song that to me sounded like what Trane would have done if he went electric with synth patches and then started quoting Love Supreme. I was happy.

That's almost exactly what I was thinking. He builds the piece up until all that's left is a squeal sort of like Sun Ship. It's just so logical and really takes you on a journey.
never heard anyone take all those influences from Parker to Miles to Ornette and beyond and just put them all together in such a musical way.

yeah totally

Not only that but he is really into having fun. He played probably 30 minutes over because the audience just couldn't get enough. Cooler even is that he came to the late night hang afterwards to meet the ppl. You don't get a lot of "A team" Jazz musicians who do that anymore, most are happy to go to their hotel room, and that's cool. Some of these guys have insane tours and or are getting older. KG though was there, I wasn't (sadly) but I was very happy to hear he was so friendly and approachable to the fans.

Jake, the more I listen to his music the more I think that there are few players alive today than can touch him.
Few recordings can bring tears to my eyes. Native Tongue off the Standard of Language Cd is one.
Anyone into Jazz needs to hear this genius.

I am seriously thinking of getting a used or cheap alto and trying to learn how to play it. I have never been so inspired by a musician of any genre.

I heard him two times with Miles when I was a kid. At the times I really wasn't able to listen to music and musicians, so I say that I just heard him, in the sense that I was there while he played.

A couple of months ago I bought the live cd by Corea's and McLaughlin's Five Peace Band, and listened to him for the first time. I think his solos are the best on that cd, he is really great!
