| | Adam Rogers I got the see chance to see Adam play last night at The Rex in Toronto. I've spent a lot of time listening to his records but I've never seen him live before. What a wonderful player! I was also blown away by what a laid-back guy he was. A friend and I chatted with him before he went on; he actually lined up a lesson with Adam for this morning (he'll fill me in the next time I talk to him ). All around great guy and amazing player. Anyone else catch him live?

| | I've seen him live with Chris Potter's group, he was great. He also hung out with me outside the club for like 30 minutes just chatting about classical right hand technique, very cool.
So Evan why didn't you get a lesson with him?

| | Ha! Well my buddy, Chris, had e-mailed him a week ago and offered him something like $200 for an hour lesson. Chris had approached him the night before (he played 2 nights) and to hear that he didn't have time and then the next night when I was there he said that we could manage one hour before he headed out of town. Had it occurred to me to e-mail him beforehand it might have been a different story...
I only wish!

| | Hi EDesa Hi man,
It's Ckao, long time no see!!
Are you in the US now?
During the hour lesson, Adam told me a lot about his influences and how he would practice the Andre Segovia maj/melodic min scales excercies, he said he used to do a lot of 1234 all the way along the neck (he said "what an ass kicker! by the time you get back down the neck you'll feel it in your hand/arm hehe), also lots of diatonic arpp in maj,harm-min,mel-min,majmin, and he said the dorian-min modes - he said he transcribed lots of wes, used to play a lot with records and would solo improv for 10-15 min on the same tune (~10-20 choruses) he said "that's where you want to get" etc... (u can read these on online articles) anyway lots of other things discussed. Basically for him, it's all about music, he said "i don't care if you play with a leaf as long as you play beautiful music".
his picking techniques, very interesting, not sure if he's like Rodney jones, sheryl bailey, david gilmore where they pick 45/90 degress upward, i mean watching in the lesson playing sacles excer, i just couldn't believe how fast he's able to play in live situations. i did read in an article that he used to practice fast all the time. Also he has such BIG ears (he plays drums and piano), when he played on night and day during the live, some his ideas where actually first coming from Jonathan Blake's drumming (bass drum), i was so astounished how fast he could react to that.
anyway i'm running out of time (at work), but did u guys see this youtube clip of his where he's talking russian? it's hilarious |
