i was wondering when the next guitar trio (or in this case quartet) would get together. it's a proven economic engine.
i'm pretty sure that McLaughlin got Paco and Larry (then Al) together first. then Barney, Herb, and Charlie did "Great Guitars". I attended concerts by both trios, they were very popular and did well. then the 3 tenors did a similar thing - big bucks ensued. (edit - Great Guitars came first. One album had Mundell Lowe instead of Barney and Larry Coryell as "special guest", probably to modernize things a bit).
the thing is, it helps to have at least one "star" in the group. that would seem to be Scofield in this case. it probably won't be nearly as sucessful as the above mentioned trios, but should be much more of a draw than any of the individuals could generate on their own. it's economic (and maybe artistic) synergy at work.
good for them! i'll buy.
