I'm fairly new to jazz guitar and I just bought a used CD of Herb. Any analysis from others on his playing? His jamming with Oscar Peterson is a resume builder and probably the high point of his career.

Yep, his work with the Oscar Peterson Trio was stellar. Then again, look at who his band-mates were. OP and Ray Brown? I mean come on, it does NOT get better than that!
I wouldn't be a jazz guitarist in a lot of ways if it wasn't for Herb. I got into the music through OP, Herb was the first Jazz guitarist I could identify with.
Herb Ellis is one of my all time favorites. Along with his work with Oscar Peterson I also enjoyed his trio work with the Great Guitars ensemble with Barney Kessel and Tal Farlow, a lot of which is out on DVD, and the duet work he did with Joe Pass, I think they did at least 2 albums together.
