Default Wayne Shorter's solo on "Deluge"

...from "Juju".

This solo has always kind of destroyed me. Wayne is often so subdued to the point that its almost MORE intense. One of the only guys Ive heard do that. His solos are usually just him working out a variation on the melody in the process of TRUEST form of improvisation. But on this one he finally explodes at the end and tears it all down. Lots of cool rhythmic stuff, some cool pentatonic stuff, but mainly just a perfect example of how to build a solo. Some of this solo (closer to the beginning) has stuff thats so fast I have to admit I can't quite pull it off at speed. But still, a great exercise in working out insane fast sax runs out on guitar. Always a good learning experience. Enjoy!

solo starts at 1:35

What a treat! Wayne's solo from one of my favorite tunes off of one of my favorite albums!

Thanks Matt!

Transcribing his solos is totally a trip. The little bit I've done, it's insane how much he stretches the time but still sounds completely in control. Some of the rhythms get darn hard to notate. I think I did his solo on 'infant eyes.' That was tough to get exact for sure.

Killer. Thanks, I'm going to try this on electric bass. I'll let you know how it goes.

HEY! i forgot to include a "guitar version" (8va). I'm so used to reading everything an octave up...anyway, this (attachment below) should help quite a bit.

id appreciate anybody weighing in as to any notational suggestions. there are quite a few areas that are hard to say. but i feel pretty good about most of it.
be sure to check the awesome lick using unison note fingerings (I've been told by sax players they just call them "overtones", anyway trane and wayne use them a lot) on the last measure of page 2! that lick RULZ!

Nice work! This is a nice tune, too.

If I may, the changes through the tune are more like this:

Eb-7 Emaj7 | ... | Eb-7 Emaj7 | ... |

Eb-7 Emaj7 | ... | Eb-7 A7lyd | ... |

Ab7lyd | F#-9/B B7 | Eb-7 A7lyd | ... |

Ab7lyd | F#-9/B B7 | Eb-7 Emaj7 | ... ||

During the solo, the non-Ebm7 chords are moved to the latter half of the even bars (for the 1st 8 of the form), and they're often using E7(lyd), rather than Emaj7 in the 16th bar.

I'm hearing more quartal harmonies and occasional side stepping (McCoy city) than a set EMa7 every measure. definitely some more Bb7 altered as well. but i do like the A7#11! word up...
