Default Tony Bennett's guitarist on Today Show

Tony Bennett was featured on The Today Show this morning. Standing near him was an excellent guitarist playing, I believe, a sunburst Godin Kingpin 2 with P90s. He mostly comped for Tony, but turned in a fine solo on one of the numbers. Anyone know who he is?

Yes, Grant Sargent really was good today. If you check out this promo article referencing him and Tony Bennett, you will see why I think he may have been playing a custom Yamaha AEX1500. In any case, if HULU is behaving itself, you can watch this morning's Today Show performance here, where he tastefully comps for Tony Bennett.

That article is over ten years old.

The headstock was definitely not a Yamaha nor did the body have any of the appointments of the AEX1500.

It looked like a Godin Kingpin cutaway with P-90s to me.

Hey monk, I'm sure you're right, although if you can see that the guitar he played today does not have any of the appointments of the custom Yamaha in the article, then you are looking at a better quality Today Show video than me. The headstock is the same shape and the fretboard looks the same in both the article and the Today Show video.

But my sixth sense tells me you know Grant and his gear better than me, and after taking a second look at the Today Show video, there are one or two shots of the headstock where the brand is too blurry to read but it looks to me more like "Godin" than "Yamaha". Also, I thought the finish was the same on both guitars, but now I'm not so sure. It's hard (for me) to tell, because if you look at the beginning of the Today Show video, you will see that Grant is bathed in predominantly red light, which affects the perceived color.

Well, I thought I had stumbled over a bit of trivia but now I guess maybe not. Sorry if it upset anyone.

HighSpeed,
No one here is upset to the best of my knowledge. No need to apologize.

Gray Sargent did play a Yamaha AEX 1500 at one time as did Martin Taylor. The Godin Kingpin makes sense as a road guitar in that it can be replaced at half the street price of an AEX 1500.

I spotted the Godin logo on the pickguard. Nice to see the sideman prominently featured on national television. Very tasteful player, and the Kingpin sounded great!
