John Scofield Hal Galper and Scof: Ivory Forest

This Hal Galper LP features a 28-yr old John Scofield. Interesting to hear him without his signature sounds. He sure had a lot of facility though...

I have a Sco cd called Rough House that has Hal Galper on piano. I love early Sco when he had a cleaner sound. You can always tell its him. Love his trio stuff w/ Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum, also.

Live with his Richie Beirach group in Germany-great stuff.
May Dance and John Scofield are 2 very early Sco recordings with trumpeter Teramaso Hino both sessions recorded very closely together, quartet and great to hear Sco amazing with the fire of a young kid, knowledge of a veteran.

What would you call his signature sound(s)? I have pretty much all of Sco's recordings and he is constantly changing his sound. Try checking out his album Works for me. Pretty much the driest jazz guitar I've ever heard. He barely even uses reverb it seems. And he seems to be playing with the bridge pickup the entire album (??). Though Sco is the man in my book I actually didn't like it to begin with but it grew on me and now it's one of my favorites.

Check out also his playing on Roy Haines Love letters. Here he has a very "traditional" sound.

Either way he ALWAYS sounds like Sco :P

This Cd recorded in West Germany 1979.
He played semi-hollow Gibson es-335.So the sound is a little different.
First song Monk's Mood show it/guitar solo/.Really it is clean sound/without chorus and distortion/.
He started to play Ibanez as-200 from 1981...I think. Ibanez As-200 is a clone of Gibson es-335 but completly different sound.
John Scofield played Gibson /chorus, distortion/ on another CD's recorded with David Liebman Quintet/1979,1980/.
