No need to compare him in the first place.

Since it was done I tried to point out why it makes little sense to do so with Lage and yes I used other players to do so for what I think are obvious reasons.

Nice snarky try. Run along.

Nowhere is where this thread has been for a long time. Now let's have some nice music to take us out:

Default Better Than Yourself?

I forgot for a brief moment that this is the forum it is, my bad!
Django is dead - long live Django! (i placed my favorite pick on his headstone on an auspicious date...but that's all superstition and nonsense)
Reality:
WE are all still alive. So, let's all play like we are Django - or ________ (fill in your guitar hero(es) - or happy students who have surpassed their teacher(s). And take what they have done to the next level, and hold each other in the light of that evolution. That is music, in the end.

There are future guitar heroes right here, right now. Some kid somewhere will look up to you like you did to your hero. Hold them in the light and hold them to the well documented, traditional language and history. Repeat...

You know, a good chunk of this thread was made of posts by people saying it's a bad/stupid/utterly ridiculous/etc. thread. Maybe it is, but I've yet to see a shred of logical thinking as to *why* it is a "bad" thread! Sometimes I wonder whether players who are themselves uncomfortable being compared to other players ... are complaining loudest.

Look at it this way: I, Kojo, am a better musician and guitarist than Kurt Rosenwinkle is, or ever will be. Everybody agrees with that.

Now....

Say what? Huh? No? Well, says who? We can't compare? He's Kurt and I'm Kojo, and he's him and I'm me, and that's the end of that. Okay, I get it. Excuse me.

So now we can't say, either, that Rosenwinkle is better than Kojo. Or anyone else who plays guitar, or who *might* play guitar - because who knows: by the end of No-player-now's life, he might be a greater player than Django! He simply hasn't started yet, so who knows? (Read the posts here!)

But we all KNOW that Rosenwinkle is better than Kojo!!!!!
------------------

Of course I'm being facetious and sarcastic, but not entirely. If we can't compare, we can't compare. If we can't judge, we can't judge.

The problem with that is that we're human beings, and human beings JUDGE. It's built-in. We can't stop it. It's part of our survival kit, and it's necessary that we judge what we encounter -- whether it's a bag of apples or a guitar player, if guitar players figure strongly into our lives. I say we can't turn it off. We can only claim to turn it off, and pretend that we've turned it off. To be human is to judge, and if one doesn't judge, he's not quite human. He's more like a corpse.

I don't know whether Julian Lage is better than Django. But, being human, I don't know how to listen to an hour of each and not come away with a notion of which player seemed more inventive, to me, which seemed more skillful, which displays, to me, more potential for growth, which plays music more pleasing to my ears, and so on. I don't know how not to judge, and moreover, I don't see WHY I shouldn't! What's the crime in it? What do I lose by it?

This was the point of this awful, terrible thread. And I'm betting that every person who said, "You can't judge THAT!" - secretly has an opinion of who's the better guitarist/musician - Julian or Django. It's only human, and there's no shame in having an opinion.

Kojo

Wes/Charlie; Bireli/Django; Lenny/Chet; Tommy/Jerry............

Was the pupil "better" than the teacher?

Of course he was, but that doesn't mean that the teacher wasn't a "great".

Don't forget George/Wes; George W/George H; Stephen Hawking/Albert, Adolph/Otto Von Bismark...
I think the pupil will always have the advantage of living in better circumstances, having better foods, internet, etc. That's why I have faith the human race can never go wrong.

But in all fairness, Kojo, Kurt's still got a few years ahead of him. He can still learn a thing or two. Let's wait a few years before we pass final judgement, OK?

I posted mainly to draw attention to the order. All of Dave's examples had the had the inspiration on the left and the inspired on the right. I knew Jerry from my days in Nashville, am thoroughly familiar with his music, have jammed with him and at one point, almost became a member of his band.

Perhaps an alternate illustration would be:
Chet/Jerry, Lenny, Tommy

Edit: As I state in a later post, I was not fully awake and clearly have no idea what I'm talking about.

Monk,

Although Tommy is a Chet admirer from way back I hear more Jerry in his playing than Chet. (IMHO).

Dave,
Fair enough.

A couple of others with a strong Reed influence were Tommy Jones and Buster B. Jones (no relation) both now dead. Both were amazing fingerstyle players.

A possibly interesting observation: Both of Chet's best known proteges, Jerry Reed and Lenny Breau, forged their personal styles by adding a piano influence to their Chet style playing. For Jerry, it was Ray Charles and for Lenny it was Bill Evans.

Regards,
monk

DG,
My apologies. I've got to stop posting before my first cup of coffee. You placed the "influenced by" player on the left and the "influence" on the right which went right over my head and when I saw Tommy/Jerry it seemed chronologically out of order. Why I saw the first three as being in order and the fourth out of order only proves that I should stay away from the computer until I am wide awake. You made perfect sense.
Moronically Yours,
monk

Lage always seems so gracious and appreciative of those he plays with. I imagine this thread would actually embarrass him.

Besides, Rolling Stone already decided that Hendrix was the best guitarist of all time.

I'm sure you're right, Jazzpunk -- unless he could stomach it long enough to read and see what it's *really* about -- the right to judge and have opinions, and the inevitability of such judgments and opinions.

But yeah - Julian seems to be the coolest, nicest person, and I'd never want to bring embarrassment to him. It was hard to find a player to compare to Django, you know?
