| | Jim Hall DVD Hi all,
do someone of you have seen this Jim Hall DVD please : Jim Hall, Instructional/Guitar/DVD - Hal Leonard Online
I never heard about it and wonder if it can be useful to get into Jim's playing, which I'm fond of. I've already seen another DVD he made : Jim Hall: Jazz Guitar Master Class - Principles Of Improvisation DVD Movie
which was good (always nice to see and hear him playing), but didn't meet my expectations. Concepts are briefly described, but not really "explained" (can't find the word I'm looking for) so you can try to use them by yourself.
Thanks guys, have swing

| | There are two reviews on Amazon, both 5 stars: Amazon.com: Jim Hall: Jim Hall: Movies & TV
I'd also be interested to hear some JGF member opinions as I'm also considering this DVD.

| | I have the first DVD you're asking about. Jim plays a tune (with a mix of outstanding band mates) and then spends some time talking about them. He does not go into the kind of details I assume you're looking for based on your brief description of the Master class dvd. He speaks in broad terms of "listening" to the rest of the band, not "overplaying", etc. It's not a bad dvd by any means, but if you're looking for technical details into his playing, I think you be disappointed. |

| | Thanks whiskey02, this is what I was afraid of.
Well I guess I'll have to transcribe and make my own "Jim Hall method" |

The music's great though, and it's nice to hear Jim talk through the changes of "All Across the City," and he also gives a cool insight into some complex walking bass rhythm stuff (in short, if the bass line is good, the chords can be pretty random!) |

(...) I didn't notice the word "rhythm" is your sentence, this may indeed allow more flexibility for chords if they are played quite shortly. |

| | Right, they're little chord stabs, played with a more "acoustic" tone--quick attack, short decay.
If that chord's hanging around, you can't get away with as much. | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
